Barona , Tel. By the order of Ivan III, which was brought by a messenger from Moscow, all the merchants from the Hanseatic League were to be jailed, inns and church to be sealed up, and the goods to be confiscated and transported to the capital. This church was not only a prayer house for foreign visitors, but also a warehouse and a kontor literally: office.

The estimated value was almost , marks — a ridiculous amount of money at the time. Fifty merchants from foreign lands were caught in the crossfire of the war between Muscovy and the Livonian Order, and were held captive.

T he Hanseatic League was formed in 12thth century, and in the begin- ning included more than 70 northern European cities, mostly on the shores of the Baltic Sea. The precise date of establishment is unknown. The Hanseatic League was a unique experiment of creating a Trans-European fellowship based on free trade, and, in some ways, was even more advanced than the modern European Union.

The first was the increasing unspoiled land acquisition in the Middle Ages, which began in the 10th cen- tury. Thousands of square kilo- metres of wood got deforested and Germany, which in the times of Julius Caesar was mostly covered in thickets, got a modern cultivated landscape. The increased cereal harvests led to an increase in population growth.

They began selling the surplus of agricultural production, which contributed to the growth of economy and trade. The second condition, which is closely related to the first, is the development of the cities — their number increased, and populations grew steadily. The feudal lords began losing control of the large trade centres, and the free imperial cities appeared. During the reign of the Hohens- taufen family, the Holy Roman Empire was with- out a strong central power, which contributed to the centrifugal tendencies, but, starting from the 12th century, the first free cities began enter- ing into mutual agreements.

The third condition was the reclamation of the Baltic Sea region. Up until the 12thth centuries, it was mostly a wilderness area on the outskirts of civilization. Although the famous route from the Varangians to the Greeks led across the Baltic Sea, the use of it was danger- ous to anyone except Varangians, until the Vi- kings adopted Christianity and submitted to the national kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

The Varangians successfully combined looting and trading, and were able to defend themselves. From the Finnish Gulf to the Elbe stretched a tract of land, which was inhabited by pagans, who did not succumb to any power. The Slavs and the Balts carried out audacious raids across Scandinavian cities, seemingly in retaliation for the former Viking crusades. From 10th to 12th century they captured a territory that was home to the future German provinces — Brandenburg, Mecklenburg, Pomerania, up until the Vistula.

The Slavic tribes that lived there Obotrites, Pomeranians were germanised. The second phase of Drang nach Osten be- gan — now mostly under religious flags. At that time, the Crusaders had lost the Jerusalem and the Muslims began to squeeze them out of the Middle East.

Therefore, the Holy See switched their attention to the Baltic countries — they were a convenient colonization object that allowed to draw non-believers to the true faith. In , the first knights disembarked from the vessels in the mouth of Daugava. Under the command of the bishop Albert of Riga, they soon established the Livonian Brothers of the Sword and subjugated the local tribes, despite the desperate resist- ance.

Riga established in became the centre of the new Baltics. After the German crusad- ers and colonists came the merchants, mostly because the bishop Albert freed the city from the fees for all merchants from Gotland, and the cross and the sword provided the necessary peace and protection. Now we should take a look back.

Its merchants did a lot of trading with the East and the West. This island had a strategically important location in the Baltic Sea — it was a junction of trade routes between Sweden, Livonia, Estland, Prussia, Germany and Poland. Ship convoys passed through it on the way to Russia. Hansetag was the supreme governing body of the League. The Hanseatic League dealt with many issues — fought pi- racy, made decisions in trade disputes, provided common trade rules and warehouse guarding, maintained transport communications.

The Hanseatic League was an arrangement, in which the elements of trade guilds, state authority and local autonomy intertwined. This union was not a country, but had its own navy, which struck fear not only into the pirates of the Baltic Sea, but also could conduct war with other countries.

These achievements are made even more surprising by the fact that the League had no central government, no standing army or navy, and the only way in which they could force the member cities to comply with its decisions, was the threat of exclusion. That happened to Bremen. The exotic spices pepper, ginger, nutmeg were very important, as well as jewellery and luxuries.

In the opposite direction, for example from Sweden, they brought iron, copper, butter and leather. From the southern coast of Baltic Sea to the West, they sent herring; the demand for it was increasing, as more and more people observed fasting.

From Russia they brought wood, fur, candle wax, tar and true hemp. The most valuable furs came from modern Karelia. Merchants from Novgorod operated as mediators by buying game from the Finno-Ugric tribes. It is interesting that Russia, which exported wax, imported European honey in large quantities.

Modern German researchers think it was due to the pe- culiarities of taste, which were caused by the diverse flora, while others believe that the people of Novgorod exported honey further to the Byzantium and the Golden Horde. The Hanseatic League was an arrangement in which the elements of trade guilds, state authority and local autonomy intertwined.

A single cog could carry up to tonnes of cargo. All vessels had arbalest shooters on board, but starting with the 14th century, cogs were equipped with bom- bards. Later on, special war cogs were built, which escorted the trade ships. Nowadays, after hundreds of years, we can speak about other kind of export, which was unseen by the contemporaries — the institutional and cultural export.

The Hanseatic merchants significantly influenced the countries in the north of Europe. In the cities on the eastern coasts of Baltic sea Riga, Reval and Dorpat the mentality was transformed fundamentally. Of course, they were mostly inhabited by German and Danish immigrant descendants, who brought the Euro- pean way of life with them.

The indigenous peo- ple — Livs, Ests and Baltic tribes — continued to live in rural areas, but were involved in economic relations with the merchants and craftsmen from the city. Any farmer could go to the market, castle or church, and see a completely different world. Thus, the loss of political independence led to an access to a more advanced civilisation. It was the period of time when the foundations of the civilisation differences were laid, which had an important role in the events of and Several monuments of this era — buildings built by various guilds — can still be seen in the old city of Riga.

The Baltics were a bridge, which connected Russia with the West. Riga had agreements with Smolensk, Polotsk and other Russian cities. In Netherlands and England they had to compete with the local traders, but here they had no competition.

The merchants in- volved the indig- enous people in the international trade and introduced them to the European way of life. The Holy Roman emperors fought with the popes and the great princes, so they did not have time to pay attention to the northern German cities.

Demark lost the war against the Hanseatic League; Sweden was its reliable ally and actively colonised Finland, thus opening new markets.

Russia was in a state of political decline, caused by the invasion of Mongols and the feudal fragmentation, and was not a threat to the Livonian union. The Novgorod Republic was much more interested in stable relations with the Hanseatic League than the kingdom affairs of Russian princes.

They took an evasive position against these states and looted them frequently by sending ushkuiniks Russian vikings down the Volga river. Lithuania, which was the border of the Livonian Order, expanded south. As soon as strong national states developed in Europe, the favour- ite weapon of the League — prohibition of any trade operations except their own — was used against themselves successfully. The golden age of Hanseatic League coincided with the period of feudal fragmen- tation, when merchants took the matters of free city defence in their own hands.

The League could not continue keeping up with Sweden or Russia any longer, because the forces were unequal.
