The VIP upgrade includes a newly built annex that connects to the existing building, forming a single complex with a lobby and administrative area, expanding the total to more than sqm. At the new-look facility, elite passengers can now quickly carry out the formalities before or after their flights as security is integrated within the complex.
The airport is clearly improving its position in the private aviation transport market. In , Riga saw a record 5. But as the overly ambitious airBaltic cut routes in an effort to restructure, passenger numbers in Riga stagnated.
Vilnius, which has cut its fees to attract low-cost airlines, is seeing a rapid increase. Wizz will start operating four new routes from Riga this summer, to lowcost airports in Barcelona, Sheffield, Dortmund and Paris, and increase frequencies to London and Oslo.
That will make 25 weekly flights on eight routes from the Latvian capital. That will bring relief, as the terminal is feeling cramped at peak hours.
W Airport business By Howard Jarvis. Airport is strategic location for Costa Costa Coffee is a fast-growing UKbased multinational chain of cafes. It has 11 outlets in Latvia, including three at the airport.
How long has Costa been at Riga airport? Costa entered the Latvian market in ,buying the company that ran the local Coffee Nation chain, which already had two cafes at the airport in departures. We opened a third, this one here in arrivals,in November. Is being at the airport good for business? When passengers pass through the arrivals gate,Costa is the first thing they see.
There are other cafes at the airport but no other coffee store concept. Prices are the same here, but a little more expensive in departures. How would you describe your niche at the airport? We serve premium quality coffee, made in our own roastery from specially selected beans. All the baristas are coached over several days in the coffee-making art at our academy.
Costa is an international brand so the quality is essential. The atmosphere is familiar and people know what to expect. Many people know it and come here for it. Yes, very satisfied. It all gives a positive impression of the airport environment — and that reflects well on our brand too. Riga is also experiencing consistent growth in cargo volumes, reaching a record of almost 8, tonnes last October.
If Riga is to retain its position as the only transit airport in the region through which passengers can reach destinations in Europe, Scandinavia, the CIS and the Middle East, it will have to keep developing quickly. Today almost a half of all income at the airport comes from non-aviation revenues such as the growing retail space in the terminal.
The Istanbul-based airport retail operator ATU Duty Free interview overleaf came on the scene in following a tender. In , the first person was hired as a non-aviation marketing manager. Craftily, the first thing passengers see after security control are the main duty free stores, which are followed by specialist retail stores such as fashion and jewellery, while food and beverage points are generally at the end.
A smoking area was placed next to one of the cafes, luring smokers. The airport also says it has one of the fastest free Wi-Fi speeds among airports worldwide. Users just have to endure ten seconds of advertising before logging on.
After the new commercial layout was implemented, airport revenues from retail operations almost doubled during the first year. Its success has helped Riga to set highly competitive airport charges, attracting new airlines to launch flights here and supporting the airport infrastructure development projects. How does it work? Heinemann, whose expertise is in global travel retail and logistics. Our business model is the perfect combination of retailer, airport operator and supplier.
How did you come to operate here? TAV Airports was already in charge of the development plan in Riga when the opportunity to compete to operate the retail areas there arose. I would like to emphasize that we are experts in the travel-related retail business.
ATU Duty Free serves more than 83 million traveling customers each year, running 16, square meters of retail space in all of the airports where we operate. Our vision is that we believe in an innovative approach to business with the customer at the center.
Regarding the brands we work with, our approach is different to the High Street approach. We use the expertise of all partners. Brands and airport retail The professionals behind much of the non-aviation revenues flowing into Riga International Airport are ATU Duty Free, a Turkish retail operator at 11 airports in five countries, with more on the way.
Brands are picked according to the size and scale of the national preferences already demonstrated in the home markets. Initially what we do is gather concrete information on the market. We reflect this within our retail product groups at the airport. Passengers have been really impressed to see it at Riga airport.
We would definitely have it right away in the Middle East. They are in Istanbul too, and we would definitely bring them to Tunisia.
Also culture affects customer choices. Each nationality has a different approach to buying. Some nationalities are more focused on local products, some on fragrances, some on confectionery. What brands are represented at the airport depends on the acceptability of these products in the home nation. Turkey is accented towards tobacco and perfume, North Africa towards confectionery, Georgia towards alcohol and wine.
Russians are very interested in luxury brands, cosmetics and beauty products, Central Europeans in strongly priced special offers and advantageous prices on perfume, tobacco and alcohol.
How would you describe your working relationship with Riga airport? We have been overwhelmed by the partnership with Riga International Airport. Brands are visible to Riga residents and beyond. We get all the necessary support from Riga airport.
Business growth is assured as passenger numbers grow. What we aim to do is create the best possible customer approach at the airport. The customer is always at the center. According to turnover and revenue, ATU Duty Free is in the top 15 dutyfree companies in the world — and one of the fastest growing. Istanbul is one of the top 10 operations in the world. Riga is a mid-sized European airport and there is no such ranking for this. But it is definitely one of the most appreciated in this area in terms of brand feedback.
Business is quite seasonal but an above-average performance for Central Europe. How do you approach marketing? How do you inform passengers what they can buy in advance of their arrival? There is always room to improve when it comes to marketing. We are concentrating now on developing concepts and a clear communications strategy for Riga.
At airports products tend to come with additional value, for example in special packaging, creating extra interest. Products are different in terms of size, etc. Space and the concept of stores are very important. You can never attract brands to places that are not suitable for their image. In Riga what we aim to do is create the right environment and concept where brands would come and invest. They will never do it without a good partner already on the ground.
In turn, that creates trust towards our own brand. Let your stay in hospitable Riga be pleasant, bright and unforgettable! It is a publication of high quality and relevance for every visitor of our city. Every issue has a logical arrangement, is brief but thorough, providing information and recommendations that is timely and easy to read.

There are a lot of really good restaurants, with some really talented and passionate Latvian chefs. We have visited Line in Jurmala a few times already which we find excellent. Besides the wonderful food, efficient service and unique location, it is the relaxed and friendly atmosphere that makes this an outstanding restaurant. However, as the weather is improving we plan to explore more of the surrounding areas over the summer. We have actually canceled our planned vacation in Ireland this year to explore the Baltics instead.

Before the Riga Dome Cathedral became a concert hall in , old St. Gertrude Church was the main organ concert venue in Riga. The exhibition will be open throughout the summer. In the core of this themed exhibition are summerly motifs of flora and fauna, as well as a living palette of colors. Every visitor will have the opportunity of finding a highlight to complement any summer attire. The program is united by motifs and images characteristic of the world of Romanticism: dreams, nights, tears, sorrow, and hope… The brilliant th century Italian Baroque opera arias will stand in contrast to the bittersweet contemplating, easy-flowing ancient English songs, composed by the great British song writers of the th century — Henry Purcell, John Dowland, and Thomas Campion.
This time we visited places that have become popular among locals as well as visitors. There will always be skeptics who say that there is only one Paris on Earth, which cannot be compared to any other city. There are no Italian districts in the city that feel like an American metropolis.
A bit further you can find four comfortable tables, but on the walls there are photos of the harsh Don Corleone played by the legendary Marlon Brando and other scenes from the famous movie. It feels like the Godfather really did have dinner here! Three friends, Rihards, Arturs and Maksim, are fans of the movie, so when they decided to open their own pub there were no doubts about what name to give it.
The name also reveals the choice of gastronomic concept — Italian cuisine with traditional pizzas and pastas. Choose from almost ten different pizzas, from the classical Margherita to Siciliano to Milano and finishing with the special The Godfather — ruccola, Parma ham, pesto, chili, mozzarella, tomato sauce and tomato salsa.
Honestly speaking, this is one of the best offers in the neighborhood. Also there are salads and appetizers, including a classic Caesar salad. And the choice of pastas is extensive. At all events, a sense of fullness is guaranteed for several hours. Order an American-like special The Godfather burger with bacon, cheddar cheese, meatball with an egg, tomato, ruccola, pickled cucumbers, roasted jalapeno pepper and potatoes fried in truffle oil.
Desserts are on offer too, including the ubiquitous Tiramisu, but the owners admit that the main idea is more to make hearty dinners. The Godfather is without doubt an interesting finding on the Riga gastronomic map. Dishes are of high quality and not expensive. The choice of wines could be a bit wider taking into account that Italian cuisine dominates. Also the atmosphere may be better if Italian stars were on the Tv instead of Robbie Williams, as was the case during our visit. We like to enjoy a meal accompanied by authentic music.
But, of course, tastes differ. The main idea is to make dishes which the owners love themselves. It really is just like in a family. Be sure — here you will receive an offer that is hard to resist. No matter where an arcade may be located — Paris, Barcelona, Riga — it has a special charm. Just a few steps aside from the busy rhythm of the urban routine, there is a parallel world filled with peace, leisure and almost another flow of time.
There is a story going back some 80 years in the same area when two famous poets marked the publication of their book. They called a taxi of that era and stopped at each pub to raise a glass.
Their trip lasted two weeks! Times have changed since then, but the corner of Marijas and Dzirnavu streets is still full of people. Bagatelle has its own aura and style. Besides, this place could be called a genuine family restaurant.
The place has chocolate brown, beige and black-and-white tones, which together with the wide windows create a pleasantly calm, cozy and at the same time elegant atmosphere. The main emphasis of the menu is on European cuisine with a seasonal local accent. Nothing is served that has previously been frozen. Except ice cream. Every morning the owners go to the nearby market and pick up all they need as fresh as possible from already-known sellers.
So the menu changes often, and Evelina gets her inspiration from new trends in world cuisine. Meat is prepared in a unique way, in a special oven at low temperature, which makes for example pork especially soft, tender and juicy.
The restaurant always offers three main meat dishes and a fish dish. The antipasto is especially tasty with wine, the selection of which is rich, with classics from Spain, France, Italy and the Bagatelle. The number three has spiritual meaning. In Latvian folklore the number has a sacred meaning and is the most often used. Even a water molecule consists of an oxygen atom with two hydrogen atoms. Numerologists believe that three is dynamic and open-ended.
It means the appearance of new abilities, potential, development. Three eternally symbolizes private initiative, activity, action, and the creation of a new situation.
Both kitchen gurus have been behind a number of perfectly executed projects over the last five years. Speaking about the number three, it should be noted that the word prir in the ancient Scandinavian language also means three. It symbolizes the concept of three pillars of any successful and commendable food outlet — a chef, a waiter, and a sommelier.
The new restaurant is situated inside the Nordic House and symbolically represents the Nordic cultural and cuisine traditions of forest food — fresh, hand-picked forest bounties and seafood, the harvest of short northern summers: berries, mushrooms, fruit, game, fish, and vegetables prepared to preserve their natural energy and flavor. The interior is characterized by classical Scandinavian minimalism.
Nothing is pompous or artificial here, and that reserved Nordic character creates a pleasant homelike atmosphere. In the vases there are no floral arrangements — only elements of wild nature. Small branches of bilberry bush, for example.
There are around 40 seats in the first room, called Earth, but in the near future a second room will open on the floor above, to be called Sky. On the first floor simple dishes will be served, on New World.
There are plenty of desserts. Homemade ice cream can be ordered and there are cakes and pies filled with curds, carrot, pumpkin and chocolate. In summer you might find ice cream topped with a berry sauce, and in autumn enjoy the most delicious hot apple pie. We did this and opted for sorrel soup with Caesar salad and locally prepared tagliatelle with trout, capers and spinach sauce or turkey with carrot rice, apple puree and red cabbage salad and banana pie for dessert.
The portions were large, the sorrel soup soft and saturated, the sorrel picked that morning. The cherry on the cake was some delicious Julius Meinl coffee.
Come from 6pm and the dishes are a la carte, the prices moderate. A recent tradition at Bagatelle is brunch on Sundays. Try pancakes with maple syrup, croissants with salmon, various omelets, and dishes a la carte. But the number of tables expands in summer when the terrace is open outside and guests can peacefully and calmly enjoy their savory meals, wine and pleasant temperate, yet very warm-hearted service.
The restaurant is constantly searching for creative solutions, intentionally avoiding diversity and presenting the menu on only two pages. There are also main courses a gourmet will highly appreciate! The serving is laconic but sophisticated, in carefully chosen dinnerware. He will give you all the details about each dish, even which farm or field the products are from. Another experienced chef, Juris Dukalskis, cares about this. If you order an appetizer the chef will make it in front of your eyes.
We strongly advise you consult with sommelier Janis Gailis. He will recommend you the best wine that perfectly matches the flavor of your chosen dish. The food and the recommended wine will ideally complement each other.
The wine list here is extensive, including everything you might need — wines both from the traditional regions and the New World. In the near future, according to Janis, the wine list will be even larger. So it seems this restaurant is the best choice for even the pickiest wine lovers. It was fantastic, served in a saucer separately from the accompaniment, so that each guest can choose what to add to the dish.
The special taste of goat cheese together with a thick sour-ish soup has interesting contrasts in taste and a longstanding aftertaste. As for the dessert, it was a real festival of flavor. Cream cheese and white chocolate balls in the bilberry, raspberry and roasted oatmeal dust. Sophisticated, tasty, perfect! The restaurant is still in development, but it is definitely on the right way. After a few months it will surprise us with new delights. After all, 3 Prir is a restaurant of feelings, not dreariness.
Riga boasts a surprising range of high-end fashion brands and stores that are continuously launching and re-launching in the city. Here are some examples of the very finest brands to appear in Riga. From season to season, jeans hold a prominent place in the Love Moschino collections.
This season they will be accessorized with eye-catching print T-shirts, jumpers, leather tunics and trenches, dresses, leggings and shorts. Chunky sweaters make an active contrast with tight leggings, and the bright monochrome color combinations create an illusory effect and psychedelic silhouette.
This is passion for fashion in an original and creative way. Bright colors — flaming orange, deep mazarine blue, burning red — also help to show the passion. In the video, a futuristic and industrial backdrop creates modernist lines of graphic symmetry and a sense of moody anticipation.
